Osteopaths in Glasgow
In the past decade, Glasgow has undergone a phenomenal economic resurgence. With a booming growth rate of 4.4%, Glasgow’s economic growth comes in second only to London throughout the UK. There is no doubt that this new growth is bringing great benefits to the city – including, most notably, the winning bid for the 2014 Commonwealth Games. What, though, is the impact of this economic growth on the health of Glaswegians? Glasgow City Council’s Executive Committee recently approved plans to establish a Health Commission, which will address Glasgow’s health record and produce recommendations for sustainable improvements. Steven Purcell, Leader of Glasgow City Council, believes this is a unique opportunity for Glasgow to examine how the city’s changes have been affecting the health of its inhabitants. Purcell says the commission will explore not only the health system, but also issues such as employment, transport, housing, the environment, leisure and education.
As more and more jobs are created within Glasgow, more and more workers are travelling into the city centre for work. According to the Scottish Household Survey, nearly 50% of workers in Glasgow commute from outside the city every day. The effects of commuting on workers’ health have been well documented. According to the Washington Post, researchers have found that long hours driving to and from work can raise blood pressure and cause headaches, back pain, neck pain. Road vibrations, combined with sitting in the same position for prolonged periods of time cause pressure on the lower back and are detrimental to the neck and spine.
Not only are Glasgow’s workers cramped in their car or on public transport in order to get to work, but once they are there, they again spend hours in the same position, hunched over their computer keyboards or holding their phone against their shoulder. Michael Aiken, an osteopath at the Glasgow Osteopathic Centre, has firsthand knowledge of the aches and pains of Glaswegians. He has seen numerous patients who suffer from the combined effects of the daily grind. In particular, he notes, patients frequently suffer neck and shoulder pains from the strain of that hunched position in the car or at the desk. Many of his clients spend even their lunch hour at their desks, catching up on emails or paperwork. “Getting up and stretching during their lunch hour,” Michael Aiken states, “would help to undo the stress and strain that builds up during the day. When you spend all day in the same position, pressures build up in the same areas, and this can become very painful.” Luckily, Glaswegians can count on the many Osteopaths in and around Glasgow. Glasgow Osteopaths can not only cure existing pain but can also offer advice and postural techniques to ensure that the pain never returns.
