Osteopaths at Malvern Osteopathic Clinic see patients with many different conditions, two of the more common complaints are discussed below

Birth Trauma and accidents whilst a child

Psychiatrists and psychologists are well-known for stressing the importance in understanding what happens before a child is born, during the birth process and what happens in the early years. Cranial osteopaths have long recognised that the birthing process imposes enormous strain on babies, particularly if the birth is difficult or elongated. The baby's skull stretches to accomodate the narrow birth canal, but only gradually recovers its shape. After a difficult birth the process of "unmoulding" may be incomplete, leaving residual stress within the head and impacting on the nervous system. These stresses can give rise to conditions such as colic, trapped wind, regurgitation, feeding difficulties and sleep problems. In addition childhood is a time of slips, trips, falls and scrapes, each of which can potentially impose a similar burden of stress.

Rebound headaches

Rebound headaches are the result of taking too many painkillers. Osteopaths frequently see patients presenting with headaches. On taking a history it then emerges that the patient has a chronic painful condition such as arthritis for which they are taking large quantities of pain-killers on a continual basis. However, these headaches are actually caused by the analgesics themselves. One indicator suggestive of a rebound headache is that symptoms are worse in the morning right after waking. This is due to the pain numbing effect of the drug wearing-off overnight. Osteopaths will suggest that patients cut-back on the quantities of drugs they are taking and rather focus on the real cause of their complaint. If, for example, the issue was arthritis there are a number of non-analgesic supplements which can be taken as well as physical relief and exercises.
