New Council

Monday 8th September marks the launch of the General Osteopathic Council’s (GOsC) campaign to recruit members for the reformed council.

The change to a new smaller council is in line with all other healthcare regulators in compliance with the Governments planned reforms for health.

The new Council is set to be reformed by April 2009. It will comprise 14 members (previously 24), constituting 7 osteopaths and 7 lay persons. Thirteen new members are being sought since the current chair, Professor Adrian Eddleston, will remain for a further four-year term up until the end of March 2013.

All new members are to be appointed by an independant body – the Appointments Commission, ‘an additional requirement is that the at least one member of the General Council must live or work wholly or mainly in each of England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales’ (GOsc Website).

The new Council will play a role in developing osteopathic regulation in the UK whilst continuing to ensure quality in patient care.
