The Osteopath Network only registers fully-qualified and experienced osteopaths. As a minimum requirement, osteopaths must have more than 5 years post qualification experience to be eligible to join our network. In most cases osteopaths in fact have more than 10 years under their belts. Before accepting a clinic we check with the General Osteopathic Council that the osteopaths are registered and are in good standing. In addition, we check registrations with private health insurers both to enable patients to claim rebates, but also to cross-check the experience and suitability of the practitioners.
Whilst it is helpful to investigate the experience and qualifications of an osteopath, we believe that the most important indicator of quality is patient feedback. As a result we attempt to contact every patient after their first appointment to hear from them whether they were happy with the treatment, whether their appointment was on time and how they review the clinic. We are in fact able to interview around 75% of patients in this way, but do not manage to get hold of everybody. The information gleaned from patients is crucial in helping us improve the quality of osteopathic services. If we do not get overwhelmingly positive responses we rapidly remove the clinic from our register and cease referring patients.
The quality of the osteopaths to whom we refer patients is paramount and we underline the seriousness with which we undertake the quality audit with a patient guarantee. If patients have any concerns about their treatment we strongly encourage them to telephone us to discuss issues arising from their treatment. We will do whatever we can to answer questions or provide discreet feedback to a practitioner. I the rare event of any serious complaint we will assist the patient to file a complaint with the appropriate regulatory body.
